Can autoimmune disease be a gastric bypass complication?

Could autoimmune disease be a gastric bypass complication? I had my weight loss procedure done in 2004. I am doing well for the most part. There is one exception though. I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (pemphigoid) in 2007. Could this be a complication because of the operation? The doctors are having a very difficult time trying to control this disease. Thank you.

That could have caused it

Your bariatric procedure could be causing your auto immune disease, but there is no way to exclude all of the other naturally occurring possibilities. There are two major things that come in to play. Things like Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Lupus, and any of the other 80 or so other chronic illnesses mostly affect women, they tend to run in family's, occur after periods of physical stress like pregnancy, or after hormonal changes like peri-menopause. Second, it is a fact that after the gastric bypass your body does go through many changes which include physical, hormonal, and mental.

So did the weight loss procedure cause the problem or just bring it to the forefront sooner than it would have happened on its own? You really never know, unfortunately.
