Are We Obsessed With Celebrity Weight Loss?
Why does celebrity weight loss look so easy? In today's society you can't watch television, pick up a magazine, or see a movie without being bombarded by "perfect" images of men and women. But are these images realistic?
No, these perfect images do not exist. The list of celebrity weight loss stories continues to grow and will probably never end. When you are in the public's eye day in and day out, with papparazi always looking to catch you at your worst, being weight conscious is unavoidable.
But what we mere mortals need to keep in mind is that most celebrities have resources (personal chefs, personal trainers, thousands or millions of dollars at stake if they "blow up", etc.) that the "average joe" can't afford. Some celebrities choose a weight loss program to help them lose the weight, while others opt for weight loss surgery.
The Star Jones gastric bypass had been speculated about for years before she actually came out and addressed it herself. There has also been rumors of a Nancy Wilson lap band procedure, but it was her sister Ann Wilson (both from the rock group Heart) which had the lap band surgery. She was actually a spokesperson for the company Inamed, which makes the Lap Band.
Al Roker (famous weatherman) continues to maintain his considerable weight loss after gastric bypass surgery. And popular Randy Jackson (from American Idol) isn't exactly slim, but weight loss surgery has helped him shed a significant amount of weight and improve his health.
Not every celebrity weight loss case needs or opts for "the knife". Melissa Peterman (Barbara Jean from sitcom Reba) lost over 60 pounds using a weight loss program of proper diet and exercise.
Because celebrities are in the spotlight so much, some people tend to romanticize their experiences and decide to mimmick their activities, hoping for the same result. But surgery is something that should never be taken lightly, and you may not get your desired result. Singer Carnie Wilson is still battling (some may say losing the battle) with obesity, even after her gastric bypass surgery.
Only you can ultimately decide which route is best for you. Because in the end, you have to live with the decision and consequences of your actions.
Ever wonder what it's like being overweight?
