WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF OBESITY?

Definition of Obesity

So, what is the definition of obesity anyway? This term has been used so often, that we assume everyone knows what it means. Obesity is defined by merriam-webster.com as a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. If you are obese, it may be from a variety of causes.

A common indicator, when looking for the answer to "Am I obese?", is to determine is your body mass index. Your body mass index considers your weight in proportion to your height, and this needs to be considered in the definition of obesity.

The formula you can use to calculate your "BMI" is to; 1) multiply your height in inches by your height in inches, 2) you divide your weight by the number you came to after multiplying your height, and 3) take the number you came up with in step 2 and multiply that by 703. That is how you calculate your body mass index on paper. To simplify things we also have a chart.

When considering the definition of obesity, you must include your weight, height, and lean muscle mass. These are the broad number standards used when considering your height and weight alone to determine your body mass index and obesity. Compare your numbers to the classifications here: * Underweight = <18.5, * Normal Weight = 18.5-24.9, * 25-25.9, * Obese = 30 or higher

Being overweight cannot be determined by poundage on a scale alone, because every body type is not the same. For example, a body builder who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds does not have the same amount of body fat as an average person who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, with the same weight of 210 pounds. The definition of obesity can also be described as having an unhealthy amount of fat in the body. So do not focus entirely on the classifications and numbers listed above.

Being Overweight

Do you fit the definition of obesity? Being overweight may cause problems far beyond looking good in your clothes. Obesity is a health risk. Excessive fat in the body increases your chance of heart disease and stroke. It also increases your chances of getting diabetes, cancer, gout, gallbladder disease and gallstones, arthritis, and breathing problems including sleep apnea.

Don't forget the non-medical factors that may also decrease your quality of life due to your "chunkiness", but are not listed with the definition of obesity. These things can include not being able to ride on amusement park rides (by yourself or with your child), or the worry you cause your family and loved ones who care about your health and longevity. And don't underestimate how many portly people deny themselves so many of life's simple pleasures due to fear of embarrassment. Little things like swimming in a public place or exposing themselves at the beach.

So, we now see the definition of obesity has more than one contributing factor. And if by chance you are obese, please know it is a serious issue that needs to be attacked with verocity, before it attacks you.
