How heavy do you have to be to get gastric bypass surgery?

Right now I weigh about 270 pounds and I feel terrible. I hate the way I look. My knees and back hurt all of the time, I am on high blood pressure medication, and I have asthma. I have tried losing weight on my own for more than 10 years but I am never successful in the long run. I know that there are a lot of possible complications with surgery but at this point I am willing to take the risk. I am already miserable most of the time, except when I am eating.

Someone told me that you have to be at least 300 pounds to qualify, but I can't imagine purposely gaining 30 pounds just in order to meet the requirement. Is this true?

It Depends on your BMI

It depends on your BMI. That is your body mass index. Doctors use it to determine what range your body weight is: underweight, normal, overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. If you are in the morbidly obese category then you most likely will qualify with your insurance company. If you are just in the regular obese category but have other medical conditions that are effected by your weight too then you may still qualify.

So check your BMI and make an appointment to go to a weight loss surgery seminar. Most surgeons require you come to a informational seminar first before you can see them privately.
