What are the Symptoms of Obesity?
So you want to know the symptoms of obesity? This can be very important. The best line of defense is early detection.
A person is considered obese when they have a collection of too much fat in the body. Your body mass index (BMI) is used as a guideline to determine if you are obese.
Obesity can be dangerous because it increases your likelihood of acquiring many health problems. In addition to the health issues, being too overweight can have emotional, social, and psychological effects as well. Let's review these areas a little deeper.
Medical and Psychological Symptoms of Obesity
Many obese women and men develop health issues and irregularities that come from carrying too much weight. These issues do not only occur in obese people. But for many, the health issues decrease significantly with weight loss, and completely disappear for some. These medical symptoms include:
* High Blood Pressure
* High Cholesterol
* Type 2 Diabetes (Adult onset Diabetes)
* Irregular periods (irregular menstrual cycle)
* Asthma
* Arthritis
* Lower Back Pain
* Sleep Apnea (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)
* Cellulitis
Being obese has an effect on more than just your physical body. It can effect how you feel about yourself. And though it's not right or fair, obesity can cause one to be discriminated against, unjustly. These symptoms of obesity can hurt and cause just as much damage as the health-related problems.
* Low Self-Esteem
* Poor Self-Image
* Insecurity
* Anxiety
* Depression
Weight Loss Surgeries or Weight Loss Programs?
Please don't get me wrong. Every obese person in the world does not have a medical and/or psychological problem. But for the majority of us, we are dealing with at least one of these issues because of our weight. And if it can be improved by losing weight, why not give it a try?
Losing weight can help better your health and your life in many ways. Some people can do it on their own, while many others use a weight loss program.
A good weight loss program will educate you on choosing the right foods, portion control, exercises, provide support, and many other tools to help you. It does require hard work and dedication, but the reward is well worth it.
Some people have tried many weight loss programs, but still were unable to achieve their goal and ideal weight. Losing wieght becomes considerably harder once you reach the point of morbid obesity, which is usually 100 pounds overweight or more. Weight loss surgery may be an option for you.
Weight loss surgeries should be considered a tool to assist you in losing weight. This is accomplished by reducing the amount of food you are able to take in. And with some weight loss surgeries part of your small intestine is bypassed, which doesn't allow all of the food you do eat to be absorbed by your body. This option should be reviewed and thought about carefully. This requires medical surgery, and there are risks and possible complications that can occur (including death as the worse scenario).
If any of these symptoms of obesity describe you or someone you know, it may be time to try to lose some weight. Your body will thank you for it. As always, please consult your doctor before starting any weight loss or exercise program.
