Why Am I Fat? What Caused My Weight Gain?
Why am I fat? That question is on the mind of many people who find themselves consuming too much food.
We all now that overeating can lead to becoming overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. Carrying too much weight on your body frame can increase your chances of developing many related health issues. These problems can range from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis, asthma, loss of mobility, diabetes, cellutlitis, and more.
Why am I fat? What causes us to continually, consistently, religiously, methodically, overeat? And, why can't I stop eating?
After being obese for many years, and actually having the guts to face my own food demons, I can now answer this question. Every overweight person may not relate, but there are many of you who will.
Bad Food Tastes So Good, I Can't Stop Eating
Food tastes so good – I am not overdosing on carrots and celery with no dipping sauce. I overindulge on the food that tastes good, like lasagna, Popeye's fried chicken, Baskin Robbins Pralines and Cream Ice Cream, Hostess and Little Debbie cakes and treats, and things like that. Many thin people have a hard time eating a single portion or less of these types of food.
Why am I fat? I allowed food to become my best friend. It started for me in my teenage years. I was always shy, and a little overweight. My introverted personality went in to overdrive once I hit puberty.
This fear of people and what they would say or think about me, in turn, caused me to isolate myself in most social situations, and the few friends that were a part of my life were kept at a distance. I would eat when I had a bad day, good day, in happiness, and sorrow. Just about every emotional change was accompanied by a meal or a treat.
Portion Control Helps You To Lose Weight
Why am I fat? Lack of portion control. Almost every meal and snack was too much food for one sitting. I could and would eat a half a box of cereal for breakfast, at times. That may sound extreme, but it's really only about two full bowls of cereal, depending on the size of bowl you use?
I almost always filled up my cereal bowl to the brim. This same bowl would hold a serving of ice cream for me, which may be half a pint or a whole pint, depending on my mood. An actual single serving size of ice cream is half of a cup. Eating too much food will almost always lead to becoming overweight, unless you are very active, and can burn off the extra calories.
Can Food Fill a Void?
Why am I fat? I'm fat because food leaves me feeling full. Not for long periods of time, but temporarily, when I need it most. I'm not just talking about the satiated feeling you get from your actual stomach being full of food, but something much deeper.
This cause of overeating and obesity is a point most people bypass, ignore, deny, or are truly unaware of. Many overweight people use food and eating to fill a void in their lives. This void can be physical, emotional, social, or mental.
I eat when I am bored, when I'm feeling sad about not having a boyfriend/girlfriend, when I am lonely, when I can't bare to think about how my life has turned out so far, when I am sexually frustrated as a single or married man or woman, or when I'm unhappy with my mate, period.
Emotional Eating Can Hurt You
Why am I fat? I consume food when I get a compliment from the opposite sex, when I don't get a compliment from the opposite sex. I eat when my job stresses me out, when my kids stress me out, and when my partner stresses me out.
I eat when I am happy and want to express myself, when things are going well, to celebrate life, when I do well on my exams or papers, when I qualify for a car loan or mortgage. When I get that new job or promotion I go to town too.
Now this may not be everybody's story, but many of these reasons explain why I am fat. And once you get to the stage of morbid obesity (BMI of 40 or above), weight loss can seem like a task that can't be accomplished without weight loss surgery.
You must know that if you do not change the way you eat, and the reasons you choose food, and the actual foods you eat, you may not lose weight, even with weight loss surgery. In the end, the goal is to make better choices more often than you make bad ones.
