Why is weight gain after gastric bypass surgery so common?

I know of more than 10 people who have had this type of weight loss surgery and at least 5 of them have gained some, most, or all of their weight back within a few years. Not to mention those who never lost enough pounds to get out of the "obese" category in the first place. It just seems senseless to me to go through all of the trouble just to end up right where you started from in the beginning, or even worse.

When this happens, can you blame your surgeon, or is it their fault?

Food is addictive
by: Anonymous

My friends say it is funny, but I believe food is addictive, and you are never fully recovered, just like alcoholics. People see the weight loss and think that they could go back to their old habits, just a little bit. Then that little bit turns in to alot, without them even recognizing it. And before you know it, they have gained back 30, 40 or 50 pounds, even with their newly designed smaller pouch/stomach.

No change in diet or exercise routine
by: Anonymous

The most common reasons that people experience failure when it comes to the gastro bypass and losing weight is due to their diet and exercise routine. Some people feel that the surgery works like magic and that they won't have to make any changes to their daily lives. This is not true.

You should follow the diet plan the doctor gives you post-surgery. Don't start adding the things that you used to eat to your diet, like fried foods, sweets (if your body could tolerate it), and more carbs than protein. You will not lose weight like that. And exercise is important. That is what helps you jump start your metabolism in addition to your diet changes. Exercise also helps you to maintain your weight loss. If you don't follow these steps then you will not succed in reaching your goals.
